Girls Basketball Playoffs: Chapelle eliminated while defending champs Warren Easton, Loranger, Ursuline, St. Katharine Drexel in action Thursday

In Metairie Wednesday night, Archbishop Chapelle fell short in its quest to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2011.

The fourth-seeded Chipmunks lost No. 5 St. Joseph’s Academy 49-34 in the Division I quarterfinals.

The Redstickers are in the semifinals for the first time in program history.

St. Joseph’s led 14-9 after one quarter and 19-15 at halftime. The third quarter proved decisive with the Redstickers dominating the Chipmunks 15-3 to take a 34-18 lead going to the final period, where they maintained the lead.

Tori Collier led St. Joseph’s Academy (14-18) with 15 points while Lindsey Lutgring finished with 10 points. Baylie Carroll topped the Chipmunks (13-16) with 20 points. Chapelle committed 29 turnovers.

A host of area teams look to punch their tickets to Alexandria this evening.

That includes four defending state champions.

In Class 4A, defending champion and second seed Warren Easton (29-5) entertains No. 7 Neville (24-9) at McDonogh 35 at 6 p.m.

In 3A, defending champion and top-seed Loranger (25-3) hosts No. 24 Madison Parish (18-13) at 6 p.m.

In Division II, defending champion and No. 4 Ursuline (21-8) hosts No. 5 Teurlings Catholic (25-4) at 5:30 p.m.

In Division III, defending champion and third-seeded St. Katharine Drexel (20-7) hosts No. 6 McGhee (15-7) at 6 p.m.

Other area teams in action include Albany, Amite, West St. John, KIPP-Booker T. Washington, Holden, Mount Carmel Academy, Cabrini, St. Thomas Aquinas, Country Day, McGehee, St. Katharine Drexel, St. Mary’s Academy, Northlake Christian, St. Martin’s Episcopal and Christ Episcopal.

There are two other matchups involving area teams.

In Class 1A, No. 7 West St. John (28-7) travels to New Orleans to battle No. 2 KIPP-B.T. Washington (19-11) at 6 p.m.

In Division III, No. 5 Country Day (16-8) is at No. 4 Episcopal (21-7) at 6 p.m.
