Girls Basketball Playoffs: Ben Franklin, St. Martin’s advance to semifinals in Westwego

Ben Franklin has long been known for being one of the very best schools in Louisiana, with some of the brightest minds emerging from its halls who are extremely successful in life.

The Falcons have enjoyed athletic success in the last few decades, particularly in soccer and in volleyball.

Now, girls basketball is poised to make its own mark.

The fourth-seeded Lady Falcons have advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in school history by virtue of a convincing 52-33 home win over No. 5 Ursuline Academy in the Division II quarterfinals Saturday.

Petra Trumbach was a force, producing a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Trumbach added five steals. Cyd Gauff had 11 points, five rebounds and two steals while Jada Washington had 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists. A. Benetrix had seven points, six rebounds and a pair of steals and J. Mitchell finished with five points, five rebounds and three assists.

Ben Franklin (23-11) advances to the semifinals to face top seed St. Louis Catholic Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Alario Center in Westwego. The Saints eliminated No. 8 De La Salle 83-46 last Thursday.

In Division IV, No. 6 St. Martin’s Episcopal has advanced to the Final Four, upsetting No. 3 St. John 41-36 on the road Saturday.

Jayden Coleman led the Saints with 11 points while Toi Robinson scored nine points. Emerson Arensman and Kylar Coleman each scored seven points.

The Saints (21-5) advance to the semifinals to take on No. 2 Cedar Creek Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Alario Center. Cedar Creek blasted No. 7 Central Catholic 81-34 Saturday.
