A pair of District 8-5A contests had decidedly different outcomes Thursday.

Playing at home, Landry-Walker remained unbeaten in district play with a convincing 43-18 victory over Higgins.

The Chargin’ Bucs blitzed the Hurricanes early, taking a 14-2 lead after one quarter and a 24-8 lead by halftime. It was 31-14 after three quarters.

Junior Tyriel Perry led Landry-Walker (18-7, 6-0) with 11 points while junior Tomaja Bowie added 10 points.

The Chargin’ Bucs, who have won seven straight games, return to district play Monday at Chalmette at 5 pm while the Hurricanes (14-13, 3-4) travel to Metairie to take on East Jefferson Monday at 5 pm.

It was two rivals battling to the finish and it went down to the wire.

In the end, the home team prevailed.

Grace King edged Bonnabel 40-39 in Metairie.

It looked like the Fighting Irish may have an easy time of it after jumping out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter but the Bruins dominated the second quarter 15-3 to take a 20-18 lead by halftime. It would be close the rest of the way.

Grace King recaptured the lead 29-27 after three quarters, setting the stage for the frenzied final quarter.

Sophomore Steffiona Washington led Grace King with 18 points while sophomore Avion Bryant added nine points and sophomore Briana Batiste had seven points.

The Fighting Irish (7-20, 3-3) return to district play Monday at home against West Jefferson at 5 pm while the Bruins (6-12, 0-6), who lost their ninth straight game, will host John Ehret in district play Monday at 5 pm.
