WESTWEGO – The Lafayette Lady Lions brought eight players to the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic.

All of them came ready to play Wednesday.

Lafayette’s stifling defense smothered Warren Easton in a 60-22 victory on the opening evening of the four-day event in the Girls Platinum bracket.

Lafayette and Warren Easton came into the Alario Center as top five teams in their respective classes. The Lady Lions defense set the tone as a 17-2 run to start the game was led by Breyonce George, Chrysta Narcisse and Jahnya Brown.

Imani Rothschild stopped the bleeding for the Lady Eagles with a driving layup and a three-pointer but Lafayette outscored Easton 16-2 in the second quarter. Kira Johnson gave the Lady Lions a spark with a three-pointer and a driving layup to help build a 35-11 lead at the half.

Lafayette (14-3) continued to pour it on in the third quarter. Johnson scored a pair of driving layups, and Peyton Harris came off the bench scoring six points. The Lady Lions outscored Easton 20-5 to put the game out of reach heading to the final quarter, 55-16.

George led Lafayette with 12 points, three rebounds, four steals and two assists.

“It’s all about teamwork. If we play together then it will be a simple win,” said George.

Johnson scored 11 points. Narcisse had eight points, four rebounds and three steals.

Rothschild led Warren Easton with eight points and two steals.

“The biggest issue is that we’re small. We got some girls back in the fold and trying to get them back in the groove,” said Warren Easton head coach Katie Sterling. “We struggled hitting shots because we haven’t played in a while. We were supposed to play twice during the holiday break, but it didn’t happen. This game will help us moving forward.”

Warren Easton (10-7) will play Liberty in the consolation bracket Thursday at 7 p.m.

“We wanted to put pressure that’s what we’re know for,” said Lafayette head coach Tarunye Kanonu. “I have a great group of players from the starters to the bench players. We are learning how to put these pieces together, jell and set the tone for the rest of the season.”

The Lady Lions will play Ellender in the second round of the Girls Platinum Bracket Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
