Girls Basketball: Hahnville extends win streak with solid win over HLB

HAHNVILLE – If anyone is going to catch Hahnville in the girls District 7-5A race, it is going to be tough.

After a slow start, the Lady Tigers dominated the rest of the way in a 60-37 victory over H.L. Bourgeois Tuesday night at the Hahnville Gym for their sixth straight victory.

H.L. Bourgeois started quickly, going on a 7-0 run in the opening quarter to lead 7-2 but Hahnville closed the gap to 8-5 by the end of the quarter. The Lady Tigers were plagued by six turnovers in the quarter. Enrea Bougere had six points in the quarter for the Lady Braves.

Hahnville turned it on in the second quarter, opening the period on a 20-0 run to lead 25-10 and the Lady Tigers grabbed a commanding 29-12 lead by halftime.

Yelah Moses had nine points and seven rebounds in the half while Kourtney Irons scored eight points, all in the second quarter for Hahnville. H.L. Bourgeois had seven turnovers in the quarter.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as Hahnville outscored H.L. Bourgeois 20-8 to expand the lead to 49-20. Niara Simmons had nine points in the quarter for the Lady Tigers.

Substitutes played on both sides in the final frame as Hahnville coasted to the win.

Niara Simmons led Hahnville (18-4, 6-0) with 14 points, Kourtney Irons had 13 points and Yelah Moses finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Pacely Williams added seven points and nine rebounds.

J’sa McGuire topped H.L. Bourgeois (12-9, 1-5) with 10 points, including eight from the free throw line. Aaliyah Singleton had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers while Bougere had eight points and five rebounds. Caitlin Howard had three points and 10 rebounds.

Hahnville, ranked 11th in the most recent LHSAA 5A power rankings, returns to action Friday night, hosting East Iberville in a non-district contest while H.L. Bourgeois entertains Thibodaux in district play.

Hahnville will travel to Gray for a rematch with H.L. Bourgeois on Feb. 14.
