Area Girls Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Jan. 17

In Metairie, Grace King made the short trip to East Jefferson and handled the Warriors 39-23 Wednesday in a District 8-5A contest.

In a low scoring affair, the Fighting Irish led 6-5 after one quarter and 14-13 at the half.

After the tightly contest first half, Grace King controlled the second half, winning the third quarter 11-2 to take a 25-15 lead going to the final quarter and pulled away for the win.

Sophomore Steffiona Washington scored nearly half of Grace King’s points, finishing with 18 on the evening while sophomore captain Briana Batiste added 16 points. Freshman Sanaa Holmes added six points for the winners.

A very young team without a senior, Grace King has a very good future. The Fighting Irish (6-18) return to action Friday at Episcopal at 5 pm while the Warriors (1-19) return to district play next Wednesday at John Ehret at 5 pm.

In a key District 9-5A contest this evening, Dominican (20-2, 2-0) plays at John Curtis Christian (20-2, 1-1) at 5 pm with the district lead on the line. Curtis is the two-time defending Division I state champion.
