Area Girls Prep Basketball Report for Friday, Jan. 18

After shocking loss to Mount Carmel Academy, whispers were prevalent that two-time defending Division I state champion John Curtis Christian was vulnerable and beatable.

While the Lady Patriots are certainly beatable, they are not vulnerable and it will take a huge effort by anyone to defeat them and knock them off of their perch.

That was evident at River Ridge Thursday evening as the Lady Patriots controlled play from the start in a solid 41-24 victory over Dominican in a key District 9-5A contest.

When you defend well, you most often win.

John Curtis shut down Dominican in the first and final quarters to ensure the victory.

The Lady Patriots took control early, jumping out to an 11-1 lead and led 20-12 by halftime. It was 33-22 at the end of the third quarter and Curtis held Dominican to just two points in the final frame to pull away.

Jerkaila Jordan led Curtis (20-3, 2-1) with 16 points while Abryhia Irons added 12. Sydney Sherman scored 10 for Dominican (19-4. 2-1).

The win enabled Curtis to move into a three-way tie with Dominican and Mount Carmel for first in the league at 2-1. The Cubs edged Curtis 45-44 on Jan. 10 while Dominican beat Mount Carmel 38-30 on Jan. 14.

John Curtis returns to action Monday, hosting St. Mary’s Academy at 6 pm while Dominican ventures out of district as well to play at Country Day next Wednesday at 5 pm.
