Gerry Glasco welcomes three additions to 2020 Ragin’ Cajuns softball roster

Group of transfers carries an impressive resume and bolsters depth for Louisiana Softball

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball head coach Gerry Glasco announced on Wednesday the addition of three transfers to the program’s roster for the 2020 season.

Joining Louisiana from the Power 5 ranks is junior infielder Mia Camuso, who last played at Oregon in 2018, and junior outfielder Callie Martin of Missouri. Junior college product Melissa Mayeux out of Miami Dade College, a native of France and former baseball player who made international headlines, rounds out the group.

“These three athletes love the sport,” Glasco remarked. “They are all physical athletes, and more importantly great students, who value the strength and conditioning program and keep themselves in the best of physical conditioning.

“Each one of them has competed at the national or international level in our sport,” Glasco added. “Our staff believes this group will help elevate our program to an even higher level the next two seasons.”

Camuso was a key contributor to Women’s College World Series runs by Oregon in 2017 and 2018, starting 117 games during the timeframe.

She hit .341, with a team-best 14 doubles, and ranked second with 47 RBI during her freshman campaign with the Ducks, which was highlighted by a game-winning single in the super regional which clinched the WCWS berth and led to an all-tournament selection at the event. As a sophomore, she posted double digits in doubles (12) for a second straight season and recorded nine multiple-hit games.

Camuso was ranked the No. 18 recruit in the nation by FloSoftball.com. She set five CIF Northern Section records in her career at Shasta (Calif.) HS with 42 home runs, 239 hits, 162 RBIs, 190 runs and 56 doubles. Her two older sisters, Samantha (UCLA) and Mandy (St. Mary’s), played collegiate softball.

“Mia will bring championship experience to our team. She played a key role on two Pac-12 championship teams and helped lead Oregon to the WCWS.

She is a leader, winner and competitor who exemplifies the type of athlete that we need here at Louisiana to help our program reach its highest potential.”

Callie Martin (Jr., Outfielder)

Martin made 110 starts in the outfield during her two-year stay at Missouri, serving as the everyday center fielder as a freshman in 2018 before transitioning to right field in 2019.

In her collegiate debut campaign, she was one of Mizzou’s top run producers ranking fifth with 25 total RBI and posting a team-high tying 13 two-out RBI. Nearly 40 percent of her total hits came via extra base hits, highlighted by 10 doubles. In 2019, Martin matched her output in doubles, was one of six players with 10-plus extra base hits and tracked down 50-plus fly ball outs once again.

A 2017 Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) All-American, she was rated No. 45 nationally by FloSoftball. Martin established a new single-season record with 13 home runs during her senior season at Raymore-Peculiar High in Fall 2016, right after she had set a new record of 16 home runs for Top 15-rated club DeMarini Aces of Kansas City in Summer 2016.

“Callie was a Top 50 recruit coming out of high school and was one of the most feared hitters in the country. She’s an experienced outfielder, having played both center and right field at Missouri.

She has tremendous athleticism, speed and the ability to hit for both power and average. She will be a great addition to our team.”

Mayeux, who excelled in baseball in France, switched to softball full-time in 2017 when she made the decision to attend college in the United States. She enrolled at Miami Dade College and competed for the Sharks in 2018 and 2019.

In June 2015, the then-teenage shortstop on the French U-18 Junior National Team became the first female baseball player added to MLB’s International Registration List, making her eligible to be signed by a club. She had the opportunity to work with several former Major Leaguers, including two-time All-Star Steve Finley and Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, at MLB’s international baseball development camps.

Mayeux was a first team All-Southern Conference selection as a freshman for Miami Dade, posting a team-leading .377 batting average with eight home runs, 15 doubles, 31 RBI and a .715 slugging percentage. A .431 average, team-best 59 RBI and 32 additional extra base hits (16 doubles, 10 triples, 6 home runs) in 2019 earned her repeat first team all-conference accolades.

Glasco’s Take
“Melissa will give us a tremendous defensive option at second, shortstop and third base next season. She is an all-around athlete who is both strong and fast, and will add much needed depth to our team.

“She has also proven to be a dangerous offensive weapon with her bat, power and speed during her time with the Miami Dade softball program.”
