Gaige Howard, Luther Woullard named to Bobby Bragan Award Watch List
FORT WORTH, Texas – Two Privateers landed on the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Preseason Watch List, which was announced on Wednesday. Gaige Howard and Luther Woullard both landed on the watch list.
This is the second consecutive year Howard has appeared on the watch list. He was also named to the Preseason Watch List in 2020. Howard was Third Team All-Southland in 2019 after he led the team in batting average at .330. Howard drove in eight runs and led the team in walks in 2020 with 15.
Woullard earned another preseason nod after making the All-Southland team according to the conference and Perfect Game. Woullard led the team in batting average last season at .381. In his first year on the Lakefront, Woullard led the team with 36 RBI.
The Privateers are one of two Southland schools who earned preseason recognition. Sam Houston State also had two preseason nominees in Colton Cowser and Jack Rogers.
The season gets started on Feb. 19 for the Privateers.
The BBCSA originally started out in 2017 as an honor going to the top college hitter in Texas. In 2019, the BBCSA expanded becoming a regional award covering Division I programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Last year, the BBCSA became a national award; however, no winner was announced due to the Covid-19 virus which cut the college baseball season short.
The winner of the BBCSA will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall at the Fort Worth Club. Texas Tech’s Hunter Hargrove won the initial BBCSA in 2017. Dallas Baptist’s Devlin Granberg took home the honor in 2018 with Texas Tech’s Josh Jung winning the award in 2019.
