Gaconi named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week
HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Corey Gaconi earned Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors Monday, the league office announced. The weekly honors are presented by MidSouth Bank.
Gaconi posted his second-longest outing of the season, going eight strong innings in a 5-1 series-opening win over then-conference leader Stephen F. Austin. The win vaulted the Lions into first place by virtue of a better Southland winning percentage than Sam Houston State and SFA.
The senior from Metairie, Louisiana, struck out seven and once again did not issue a walk, holding the Lumberjacks to just one run. After giving up back-to-back base hits to open the second inning, Gaconi retired the next 16 batters before surrendering a seventh-inning double.
At the season’s midpoint, Gaconi has issued the second-fewest walks per nine innings (0.39 BB/9) in the nation and also ranks second in Strikeout-to-Walk Ratio (21.5-to-1 K/BB). Friday’s outing lowered his ERA to 2.51, placing him eighth in a competitive conference race.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted.
The Lions (14-13, 6-3 SLC), who have overcome a slow start to win eight of their last nine contests, look to continue that momentum with a pair of midweek games against UL Lafayette before visiting New Orleans for a three-game conference series. Games against the Ragin’ Cajuns are Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Single-game tickets can be purchased online at www.LionSports.net/Tickets or by contacting the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. The ticket booth at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field opens exactly one hour before first pitch.
General Admission tickets for Lion home games are $9 for adults and $6 for children (ages 3-12). Southeastern students are admitted free with a valid university ID card.
