Gaconi, Biddy combine for shutout in series opener at A&M Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana pitchers Corey Gaconi and Jared Biddy combined to shut out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-0, Friday in the series opener at Chapman Field.
The reigning Southland Conference and Louisiana Pitcher of the Week, Gaconi (6-2) retired the final 15 batters he faced for the Lions (23-19, 13-6 Southland) before handing the lead over to Biddy in the ninth.
Biddy surrendered a one-out single to the Islanders (26-19, 11-11 Southland) before retiring the next two hitters, recording his sixth save of the season and 10th of his career. The senior from Iowa Park, Texas, moves into a tie with Mike Lutgring (1988-92) and Ryan Collins (2007-09) for sixth place on Southeastern’s career saves list.
The Lions staked Gaconi to an early lead. Grosse opened up the game with a bloop single to center field and Preston Faulkner followed with a home run just to the left of batter’s eye in center. The two-run blast was Faulkner’s seventh of the season, tying the Kyle Schimpf for the team lead.
After the home run, Schimpf was hit by a pitch and Islanders’ starting pitcher John Gaddis (3-3) walked Trey Harrington. Nathan Pilutti blooped a single into right field to load the bases. Schimpf was erased at the plate on a fielder’s choice, but Harrington scored from third base on Jonathan Parker’s sacrifice fly to right.
Gaconi, who picked up the win, surrendered three hits over his eight scoreless innings. Two of the hits came in the first two batters he faced, getting a double play behind him to work out of the inning. He retired eight straight before coughing up a leadoff single in the fourth inning and then retired the next 15 he faced.
With the win, Southeastern sits one victory shy of tying Sam Houston State (23-16, 14-7 Southland) for first place in the conference standings.
The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m. Southeastern will send senior right-hander Mason Knopp (5-1, 3.07) to the mound, opposing Islander sophomore right-hander Leo Perez (1-2, 5.36).
