HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana pitchers Trey Shaffer, Jared Biddy, Justin Simanek and Peyton Lee combined to limit ULM to one hit Wednesday as the Lions picked up a 7-1 nonconference win at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Warhawks (5-7) broke up the no-hit bid against Lee in the ninth with Trent Tinglestad’s leadoff single through the right side. It was the 18th one-hitter program history and the first since Southeastern (5-8) tossed a pair in Southland Conference action during the 2016 season.

Shaffer was the beneficiary of early run support as the Lions picked up single runs in the first and second innings.

Kyle Schimpf drove in the first run, plating Bryce Steckler with a two-out single through the right side. Trey Harrington drove in Nick Ray with what would prove to be the winning run, driving a two-out triple over the head of the Warhawk right fielder in the second.

A bout of wildness led to ULM’s run in the fourth. Shaffer walked back-to-back hitters to open the inning. With two on and no outs, Shaffer fielded a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Warhawk catcher Logan Wurm and threw down the left-field line as he attempted to nab the lead runner at third base.

One run scored on the play, but Tinglestad, who reached safely in all four plate appearances, was thrown out attempting to go from first to third.

Southeastern got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles by Connor Manola and Harrington chased ULM starting pitcher Connor Deeds from the game. Reliever Dylan Marsh was called for a balk, advancing both runners into scoring position, before Manola scored on a Cody Grosse sacrifice fly.

The Lions expanded the lead again in the fifth, plating three more runs. Marsh issued back-to-back walks to Preston Faulkner and Schimpf before exiting in favor of reliever Miles Dunn. Nathan Pilutti greeted Dunn with a bunt single up the third-base line, loading the bases.

Faulkner scored on a Brennan Breaud sacrifice fly. Manola plated both Schimpf and Pilutti with a two-out single to right.

A passed ball plated Faulkner in the seventh with the final run of the game.

Shaffer (1-1) earned the win, working four innings in a scripted start. He allowed one unearned run, walking five batters. He also struck out five, fanning the side in the third.

Biddy, who retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Simanek retired the side in order during his lone inning of work. Lee surrendered one hit, striking out one as he worked the ninth.

Deeds (0-1) was saddled with the loss, surrendering three runs in 3.1 innings of work.

Schimpf (3-for-3), Harrington (2-for-4) and Manola (2-for-4) each turned in multihit performances for the Lions at the plate.

Southeastern opens conference play this weekend, hosting Central Arkansas in a three-game series. Games against the Bears are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
