Former national junior college basketball player of the year Bigby-Williams to transfer to LSU
BATON ROUGE — LSU Head Basketball Coach Will Wade announced former national junior college player of the year will transfer from the University of Oregon to LSU this fall.
He will redshirt one year before becoming eligible to compete with the team.
“I am pleased to welcome Kavell to Baton Rouge,” said Wade. “He’s a very talented frontcourt player and a young man I know is going to work hard for us and make a tremendous impact once he’s eligible next season.”
The 6-foot-11 forward was a member of the 2017 Oregon Ducks squad that made it to the Final Four. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 37 appearances with the Ducks. In those 37 appearances, primarily off the bench, he blocked 28 shots. Before Oregon, Bigby-Williams averaged 16.8 points, 13.6 rebounds and 5.6 blocks as a sophomore at Gillette College in Wyoming.
Bigby-Williams, a London, England, native, was the No. 3 ranked junior college prospect in the nation before transferring to Oregon.
Wade acknowledged the official announcement earlier in the month that Bigby-Williams will not face any charges stemming from an investigation into an alleged sexual assault in Wyoming last year. The Wyoming Campbell County Attorney’s Office announced it had completed its review of the third-party report and would not pursue prosecution. The Gillette College Police Department has officially closed the case.
Wade said, given the situation, the university conducted a responsible and comprehensive review before approving the transfer, including close coordination with Title IX officials, multiple discussions with Gillette and Oregon officials and a thorough examination of available public records.
“This is an issue we all take seriously and we made absolutely sure we did our due diligence before considering moving forward,” said Wade. “Kavell understands that and has made clear to me that he’s going to repay our confidence by representing LSU with his very best on and off the court.”
