LAKE CHARLES – Former McNeese Cowboy basketball standout Diego Kapelan has been selected by the Fraser Valley Bandits as the team’s third pick of the inaugural Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Entry Draft.

Kapelan, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, played for the Cowboys from 2008-11, helping the Cowboys to the 2011 Southland Conference regular season title and two national postseason tournament appearances – the NIT in 2011 and the Collegeinsider.com Tournament in 2012.

Kapelan ended his McNeese career ranked No. 2 on the school’s all-time three-pointers made list with 295 and 19th in total points scored with 1,405.

His nine three-point baskets made against Northwestern State in 2009 continues to stand as the school record for most 3s made in a game.

After McNeese, Kapelan turned pro and has played for more than 10 different clubs across Europe over the course of an extensive professional career. In 2017, he won the MVP award of the William Jones Cup alongside some of Canada’s top pros and was also named an Admiral Basketball League (ABL) All-Star in 2015.

The CEBL was launched in 2018 with six teams announced to compete in the inaugural season, which will get underway later this spring.
