Former Lions football standouts Jordan, Turner selected in 2023 USFL College Draft
HAMMOND, La. – A pair of former Southeastern Louisiana University football standouts were selected in the 2023 USFL College Draft Tuesday.
Former SLU defensive back Ferlando Jordan was selected in the fourth round with the 25th overall selection by the Pittsburgh Maulers. Four rounds later the Maulers selected former Lion wide receiver CJ Turner with the 57th overall pick.
Jordan, a native of Atlanta, is one of 12 two-time All-Americans in program history. A three-time first team All-Southland Conference selection, Jordan is the league’s career record holder with five interceptions returned for touchdowns and ranked fourth in school history with 11 career interceptions.
Turner, a native of LaPlace, Louisiana, finished among the school’s career leaders in receiving yards (2,761, 3rd), receptions (207, 2nd), receiving touchdowns (23, 3rd), 100-yard receiving games (10, 1st) and total touchdowns scored (24, 9th).
Jordan and Turner will join former SLU defensive back Xavier Lewis on the Pittsburgh Mauler roster. Jordan and Turner were two of four Southland Conference players selected by Pittsburgh, joining UIW’s Lindsey Scott Jr. (1st round) and Taylor Grimes (7th round).
Jordan and Turner’s selection gives Southeastern four players on USFL rosters heading into the 2023 season, which kicks off April 15. 2020 Walter Payton Award winner and 2021 SLC Player of the Year Cole Kelley was signed by the Memphis Showboats last month.
Jordan, Turner, Lewis and Kelley’s former teammates will participate in spring practice Feb. 28 – April 1. The defending Southland Conference champion Lions are scheduled to open the 2023 regular season Sept. 2 at Mississippi State.
