Florida A&M Vice President/Director of Athletics Kortne Gosha confirmed on Thursday that the Sept. 12 football game between FAMU and Southern in Baton Rouge has been canceled.

This move was initiated by Southern due to safety precautions in response to the coronavirus.

Gosha indicated that Southern might also not play its opener Sept. 5 against Tennessee State at Ford Field in Detroit. An announcement by Southern could come next week.

The move is the second reported game cancellation involving HBCU teams in the last 48 hours. On Wednesday, the Southern Heritage Classic between Jackson State and Tennessee State, annually played at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, was canceled.
