Favorites win on opening day of SWAC Tournament

NEW ORLEANS – The top seeds advanced with little problem on the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament Wednesday at the MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

The top two finishers in each division will meet in driver’s seat games Thursday evening. West Division champion Texas Southern will face Jackson State at 3 p.m., with East Division winner Alabama State facing Grambling State in the 6 p.m. finale.

Grambling was a 14-5 winner over Mississippi Valley State in the second of four opening-round games Wednesday. The Tigers (24-24) broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth and seventh and four runs in the eighth.

Marshawn Taylor had three hits and an RBI to lead Grambling’s 15-hit attack.

Thursday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with a pair of elimination games.

The tournament continues through Sunday. Daily tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth or students with high school or college IDs.
