Darren Evans

After three seasons at Nicholls, senior cornerback Darren Evans is headed up the road to play as a graduate transfer at LSU.

Evans is immediately eligible to play for the Tigers, answering the “Help Wanted” sign hung out by Ed Orgeron.

The Glen Oaks product will finish his college career in his hometown. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Evans helped the Colonels win back-to-back Southland Conference titles the past two seasons. Evans has started 37 college games at cornerback, making 100 tackles and four interceptions.

LSU will benefit from Evans’ experience, particularly after the loss of senior defensive back Kary Vincent following his decision to opt out of the 2020 season. Evans also brings length and explosive speed.

Evans will compete primarily with freshman Eli Ricks and sophomore Cordale Flott for snaps at the cornerback position opposite Derek Stingley and the nickel/slot role.

The move to LSU should be a positive one, according to former Nicholls teammate and Southland Conference Player of the Year Chase Fourcade. “He is a 4.3 guy. He can cover the whole field,” the former Colonels quarterback said. “(LSU) likes to press. He can do that. He can be physical with the wide receivers. He can be a nickelback if needed.”

Having called some Nicholls games for network television broadcasts, I can attest to the fact that Evans is as tight in coverage with receivers as a barnacle on a wooden pier.

Evans had seven tackles against FCS national champion North Dakota this past campaign in the playoffs. He was also among the top rated corners in the FCS with 15 passes broken up in 2019.

“He has good size for a corner,” Fourcade continued. “He has experience. Makes good breaks on the ball. He has played in a lot man coverage. I’m happy for him. It’s a good fit.”

If all goes well, Evans will parlay his exposure at LSU into an opportunity in the NFL.
