Eight New Orleans area teams reach Friday’s state volleyball semifinals

Eight of 17 area teams were victorious in the LHSAA volleyball quarterfinals Thursday to earn spots in the semifinals today.

In Division I, four-time defending state champion and top-seed Mount Carmel Academy handled upstart and No. 24 H.L. Bourgeois in three easy sets.

Ellie Holzman and Tea Jones each had 12 kills while Tori Fraught produced 34 assists for the Cubs (34-2).

Mount Carmel advances to take on long-time rival and fourth-seeded St. Joseph’s Academy today at 3:30 p.m. The Redstickers outlasted No. 4 Mandeville in five tough sets.

No. 2 Archbishop Chapelle rolled over No. 7 St. Amant in three sets. Brenna Macaluso had 10 kills and three blocks while Sydne Lally had nine kills. Rebecca Lacour had 32 assists for the Chipmunks (33-10). Chapelle advances to face third-seeded Dutchtown today at 3:30 p.m. the Griffins fought off No. 6 Fontainebleau in five sets.

In Division II, No. 5 Ben Franklin handled No. 4 South Lafourche in three sets. Darian Duroncelet had 15 kills and seven blocks while Logan Turner finished with 20 digs. The Falcons (39-8) advance to take on top-seeded and five-time defending state champion Teurlings Catholic in the semifinals today at 1:40 p.m.

No. 2 Cabrini took care of No. 10 Belle Chasse in three sets. Kai Williams led the Crescents with 15 kills while Jaylin St. Martin had 11 kills and three blocks. Cabrini (30-9) will face third-seeded St. Thomas More today at 1:40 p.m. in the semifinals.

In Division III, No. 4 De La Salle outlasted No. 5 Westlake in five tough sets. Jewell Johnson led the way with 15 kills and nine blocks while Lainey Robertson had 31 assists and Taylor Edwards had 15 digs. De La Salle (24-11) advances to the semifinals to take on defending state champion and top seed Vandebilt Catholic at 11:50 a.m.

In Division IV, No. 1 Archbishop Hannan rolled over No. 8 Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans in three sets. Mikayla Boyer led the Hawks with 16 kills, Grace Lagalante had 39 assists and Mia Migliore finished with 16 digs. Hannan (38-6) will meet four-time defending state champion and district rival Pope John Paul in the semifinals today at 11:50 a.m.

The Jaguars moved on with a three set victory over No. 5 Northlake Christian. Ansley Tullis returned from injury to put away 22 kills and had 11 digs, Morgan Faciane had 10 kills and Kendall Battistella was huge with 37 assists and 15 digs for Pope John Paul II (22-9).

Third-seeded University High eliminated Haynes in four sets while No. 2 Notre Dame defeated No. 7 John Curtis Christian in four sets.

In Division V, two-time defending state champion Country Day took care of No. 9 Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau in three sets. Alex Smith led the Cajuns with 12 kills, Kaci Chairs had 11 kills and Mary Tebbe had 29 assists for Country Day (39-5), who will take on No. 4 Lafayette Christian at 10 a.m. in the semifinals.

No. 2 Ascension Episcopal eliminated No. 7 McGehee in three sets.
