Easton, Ponchatoula, B.T. Washington, Mt. Carmel, Ursuline, STA, Country Day advance to girls basketball state semifinals

The rematch looked a lot like the first matchup.

Two-time defending state champion and No. 6 Warren Easton made the trip across the Crescent City Connection Thursday evening and tripped up No. 3 Karr 58-43 to advance the Class 4A semifinals.

The Eagles defeated the Cougars by the same margin, winning 53-38 on Jan. 7.

Easton led throughout, taking a 12-6 lead after one quarter and the Eagles led 21-14 at halftime. It was 38-32 going to the final quarter.

Tianny Williams led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, including four 3 pointers. Tyrione Sparks topped the Lady Cougars (29-5) with 12 points.

Warren Easton (21-10) advances to the semifinals to take on No. 2 Huntington at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles on Mar. 5.

In 5A, No. 5 Ponchatoula is on to the Final Four in Lake Charles after a convincing 46-30 win at No. 4 Zachary.

Ponchatoula took control early, grabbing a 12-5 lead after one quarter and expanded the lead to 23-9 by halftime with stout defense and were never really threatened.

Madison Gill led Ponchatoula with 13 points while Presley Walls finished with 11 points. The Broncos end their season 27-6.

The Green Wave (28-5), which won a 5A state title in 2015, will meet top seed Ouachita Parish in the semifinals in Lake Charles.

In 3A, No. 4 Booker T. Washington rolled at home over No. 5 Albany 75-40 to reach the Final Four.

The Lions led from start to finish, taking a 22-10 lead after one quarter and a commanding 39-17 lead by halftime. It was 60-28 going to the final quarter.

Mikira Kirton led the way for the Lions with 17 points, Ra’Nae Tumblin had 16 points and Kassie Dolliole added 14 in a balanced effort. Cassie Baygents had 17 points for the Hornets (27-8).

Booker T. Washington (13-13) advances to Lake Charles to take on No. 1 seed Northwest Mar. 4. Northwest whipped No. 9 Loranger 52-31.

In Division I, No. 2 Mount Carmel Academy made easy work of No. 7 Scotlandville in a 63-35 victory in Lakeview.

The Cubs controlled play throughout, led by Miranda Strassel with 15 points and five assists while Rebecca Quick added 10 points and five rebounds. Addison Prince had nine points.

Mount Carmel (23-7), which has won four state titles, most recently winning in 2016, advances to the semifinals to host No. 3 McKinley. The Panthers whipped No. 6 Byrd 51-25.

In Division II, No. 4 Ursuline Academy handled No. 12 E.D. White Catholic 70-36.

Ursuline led 20-9 after one quarter and blew it wide open in the second quarter to take a commanding 44-13 lead by halftime. It was 59-28 after three quarters.

Nicole Young led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Kiersten Nelson had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Tyrielle Williams had 17 points for Ursuline.

The Lions (19-12) are in the semifinals for the fifth straight season. The Cardinals end their season 18-13.

Ursuline travels to No. 1 Lee Magnet in the semifinals on Mar. 4. Lee defeated No. 8 St. Michael 56-35.

No. 2 St. Louis Catholic ended the season of No. 7 Haynes Academy 73-32 in Lake Charles.

In Division III, defending state champion and top seed St. Thomas Aquinas advanced to the semifinals with a 52-36 win over No. 8 St. Mary’s Academy.

Jade Brumfield led the Lady Falcons with 16 points while Jaylyn James added 13.

St. Thomas Aquinas (30-3) moves on to the semifinals to host a familiar foe in District 10-2A rival and No. 4 Northlake Christian.

The Wolverines wore out No. 5 St. Charles Catholic 67-42.

It was 14-6 after one quarter and Northlake Christian led 30-23 at halftime. It was 44-34 going to the final quarter, when Northlake Christian exploded to pull away from the Comets.

It was a dynamic duo that led the way for the Wolverines (17-13).

Kyren Whittington led Northlake Christian with 29 points while Natalie Newberry added 24 points. Kaitlyn Abair topped the Comets with 22 points while Mya Brown added 15.

St. Charles Catholic ends its season 16-8.

St. Thomas Aquinas won both regular season matchups with Northlake Christian.

In Division IV, No. 3 Country Day downed 9-1A rival and No. 6 St. Martin’s Episcopal 53-41 in a game aured live at CrescentCitySports.com.
