The Eagles of Warren Easton impressed Friday night, defeating the McDonogh 35 Roneagles, 42-8, at Tad Gormley Stadium.

The victory sets up a big game next week at Gormely against Edna Karr with the district title at stake.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” Warren Easton head coach Jerry Phillips said. “This was a big win after they really put it on us last year. Now we’ve got Edna Karr. We’ll put this one to bed tomorrow but for now, we’ll enjoy this one.”

McDonogh 35 won last season’s meeting, 32-7. However, Warren Easton flipped the script.

Defense set the tone for the Eagles early with forced fumbles on both of McDonogh 35’s first two possessions.

Both of the ensuing drives started inside the Roneagles 40 yard line, and junior quarterback Lance Legendre capped off both with rushing touchdowns. One was from nine yards out and another from the one yard line.

The Eagles took an early 12-0 lead and never looked back.

“That (start) was huge,” Phillips said. “I told them I wanted to do something big early. Those two fumbles got our guys in the flow of the game. As you could see, we were ready to go.”

With 12 seconds left until halftime, Legendre found senior wide receiver Kiaeem Green for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Momentum continued into the second half as senior running back Larry Barabino added a three-yard touchdown on the Eagles’ opening possession.

McDonogh 35 will wrap up the regular season next week when the Roneagles travel to play Lake Area New Tech.
