East St. John handles Slidell to advance to girls basketball quarterfinals

They left no doubt.

The 11th-seeded East St. John Wildcats were dominant from start to finish in an 82-44 win over No. 27 Slidell in the LHSAA girls Division I Non-Select regional round Monday evening in Reserve.

The game was close early with East St. John holding a 15-14 lead after one quarter. That would not last.

The Wildcats exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers 22-4 to take a commanding 37-18 lead at halftime. It was 52-25 after three quarters.

It was all about senior Jasmine Mathews, who exploded for 28 points. Matthews has now scored 56 points in two playoff games. Senior Ashia Ward added 14 points for East St. John. Tramya Richardson finished with eight points.

East St. John (22-8) advances to the quarterfinals and will travel to Lake Charles to take on No. 3 Barbe. The Buccaneers downed No. 19 Haughton 57-50.
