Dominican only area team to grab top seed in state softball playoffs

Despite having 12 classes, including 194 non-select schools and 60 select schools for 254 total participating in the LHSAA softball state playoffs, there is only one area school which is a top seed and that is Dominican in Division I.

In 5A, Sam Houston (26-3) is the No. 1 seed and will host No. 32 Covington Friday at 4 p.m.

Airline (25-3) is the second seed and hosts No. 31 Zachary.

Ouachita Parish is the defending state champion and the Lions, seeded fifth, will host No. 28 New Iberia Friday at 5 p.m.

Among other area teams, Northshore is the No. 7 seed and the Panthers host No. 26 Chalmette Friday at 4 p.m. Northshore handled the Owls 15-2 on March 29 at Chalmette.

Mandeville is seeded tenth and the Skippers play host to No. 23 Destrehan Friday at 4 p.m. The two teams were slated to meet other early in the season but the game was postponed.

Always dangerous Hahnville is the 12th seed and the Tigers will entertain No. 21 Comeaux. Hahnville reached the 5A title game a year ago.

Ponchatoula earned the 14th seed and the Green Wave will host No. 19 Natchitoches Central.

In 4A, Leesville (19-2) is No. 1 and the Wampus Cats entertain No. 32 Warren Easton Wednesday at 4 p.m.

North DeSoto (27-6) is No. 2 and will host No. 31 Ellender Friday at 4 p.m.

Franklinton earned the fifth seed and the Demons host No. 28 Westgate Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Belle Chasse is No. 7 and the Cardinals await No. 26 Bastrop.

Lakeshore is No. 8 and the Titans entertain No. 25 Karr Friday at 5:30 p.m.

No. 10 Lutcher plays host to No. 23 Riverdale while No. 15 Pearl River will play host to No. 18 Plaquemine Wednesday at 4 p.m.

DeRidder is the defending champion and the 11th-seeded Dragons welcome No. 22 Huntington.

In 3A, Brusly (30-2) earned the top seed and the Panthers entertain No. 32 Wossman Wednesday at 4 p.m.

No. 2 North Vermilion (21-8) hosts No. 31 Loranger Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 3 Caldwell Parish is the defending state champion and will open at home against No. 30 Bolton Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 11 Albany awaits No. 22 Eunice.

No. 16 St. James will host No. 17 West Feliciana Friday at 5 p.m. at Lutcher Recreation.

No. 23 Jewel Sumner travels to No. 10 Sterlington.

In 2A, Many (28-3) is the No. 1 seed and will entertain No. 32 DeQuincy.

Doyle (22-6) is the defending champion at No. 2 and will host No. 31 East Beauregard Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Doyle Elementary School.

No. 11 Fisher is home to No. 22 Springfield.

No. 17 South Plaquemines travels to No. 16 Delcambre.

No. 26 Pine travels to No. 7 Avoyelles Public Charter Friday at 4 p.m.

In 1A, LaSalle (22-5) is the top seed and has a bye, as does No. 2 seed Oak Grove (18-9), the defending state champion.

No. 20 West St. John makes the trip to No. 13 Ringgold.

In Class B, No. 1 Holden (25-5) is the defending state champion and the Rockets get a first-round bye, along with No. 2 seed Castor (20-4).

No. 26 Kenner Discovery travels to No. 7 Choudrant Friday at 4:30 p.m.

In Class C, defending champion Plainview (17-8) is the No. 1 seed and gets a bye, as does No. 2 Calvin (17-3). Plainview will host No. 16 Phoenix in the regional round.

On the watered down Select playoffs, Dominican (18-3) is the top seed in Division I, which has just seven teams. Dominican gets a double bye into the quarterfinals. Mount Carmel Academy is the third seed and the Cubs get a bye before hosting No. 6 St. Joseph’s Academy.

Defending state champion and No. 2 John Curtis Christian (30-6) gets a bye before hosting No. 7 Archbishop Chapelle in a district rematch.

In Division II, defending champion Parkview Baptist (27-4-1) earned the top seed and the Eagles welcome No. 16 Cabrini next Tuesday at 4 p.m.

No. 2 Archbishop Hannan (22-6) is a real threat and the Hawks will host No. 15 Lusher Charter.

Haynes Academy is No. 3 and the Yellow Jackets host No. 14 St. Scholastica.

De La Salle is the fourth seed and the Cavaliers host No. 13 E.D. White Catholic.

Thomas Jefferson is seeded fifth and will host No. 12 University High.

No. 7 St. Charles Catholic awaits No. 10 Teurlings Catholic next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 8 Academy of Our Lady gets a home game against No. 9 St. Louis Catholic.

Defending state champion and unbeaten Notre Dame (29-0) has the top seed in Division III. The Pios get a first-round bye, along with No. 2 seed Calvary Baptist (24-5).

Riverside Academy is seeded fourth and the Rebels play host to No. 13 Pope John Paul II.

No. 6 Northlake Christian will entertain No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas.

Seventh-seeded Patrick Taylor has a home date with No. 10 Country Day Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Westwego Playground. The Tigers defeated the Cajuns 8-3 on March 26 in Metairie.

No. 14 St. Katherine Drexel will make the trip to Alexandria to face No. 3 Holy Savior Menard.

In Division IV, Ouachita Christian (23-5) is No. 1 and the Eagles host No. 16 Houma Christian Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Catholic of Pointe Coupee (20-5) entertains No. 15 St. Edmund.

No. 3 Cedar Creek is the defending state champion and will host No. 14 False River in the opening round.

In Division V, Claiborne Christian (19-9) is the top seed and gets a double bye in the diluted seven-team classification.

Northside Christian (16-6-1) is the defending champion at No. 2 and gets a bye before entertaining No. 7 Family Christian.
