NEW ORLEANS — The bad news: Xavier University of Louisiana men’s basketball still isn’t ranked among the NAIA’s top 25 teams.
The good news: XULA will have two excellent chances next week to change the voters’ minds before the next rankings Feb. 10.

The NAIA announced Wednesday its fourth coaches poll of the season, and XULA trails two of its Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rivals. Talladega is 14th, Dillard is 24th — the Bleu Devils were seven places behind XULA two weeks ago — and XULA is at the top of the “others receiving votes” list, just five points behind No. 25 Point.

The second and final round of GCAC group-play games will tip off Monday at XULA’s Convocation Center. XULA will play Dillard at 5 p.m. Monday and Talladega at noon Tuesday.

In GCAC games Talladega is 4-0, and XULA and Dillard are 3-0 apiece.

XULA was 20th in the preseason poll Oct. 14 and 23rd in the first regular-season rankings Dec. 16.

Next for XULA will be a 5 p.m. Thursday home game against Tougaloo.

Indiana Wesleyan is No. 1 nationally for the third consecutive poll. No. 2 is LSU-Shreveport, which will be one of XULA’s rivals when XULA joins the Red River Athletic Conference in July. The top four are the same as two weeks ago; William Penn is No. 3, and Lewis-Clark State is No. 4.
