Devin Brumfield named Amateur Athlete of the Month for October

NEW ORLEANS – Devin Brumfield, a senior running back from Covington High School, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for October. Monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Brumfield, a Texas Tech commit, rushed 98 times for 673 yards and six touchdowns as Covington went unbeaten during the month at 4-0. Brumfield, who averaged 168.2 yards per game, was named the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl/Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Quarterback Club, CrescentCitySports.com and Friday Night Football Prep Player of the Week in the metro area for his brilliant game in 28-23 win over Northshore – he carried the ball 35 times for 262 yards and a touchdown in that game. He also tallied 148 yards in a win over Hammond, 143 in a St. Paul’s victory and 120 in a blowout of Fontainebleau. Earlier this season, Brumfield set an all-time record for rushing touchdowns in Covington football history. He now has 69 touchdowns in his illustrious career, smashing the previous record of 57.

Brumfield earned the honor over three other talented nominees. Juliana Tomasoni, a star volleyball player for Xavier University led the Gold Nuggets in kills, hitting percentage and aces as they captured the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship. Newman junior Martin Butcher threw for 1,183 yards and 13 touchdowns in October while Hahnville star Anthony “Pooka” Williams had another tremendous month, running for 691 yards (13.5 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
