Denham Springs faced the task of bouncing back from last week’s injury to starting quarterback Reese Mooney, who suffered his ankle.

Mooney will be out at least eight weeks. The Yellow Jackets did not let that stop them Friday night, scoring six rushing touchdowns in the first half on the way to a 59-6 win over Tara.

Ray McKneely’s 12-yard run was the first of many where the Denham Springs offensive line opened up big holes during the night. Cam Kelly scored on a one-yard run to double the lead.

The Denham Springs defense also played aggressively through the first half forcing turnovers. Defensive tackle Porter Gibson rumbled down the field after a fumble recovery to the Tara 35. On the next play, Micah Harrison broke loose for a 35-yard touchdown run to cap the first quarter scoring.

An interception set up another Harrison score on an eight-yard run.

Cam Kelly’s six-yard touchdown was followed by yet another rushing score set up by Harrison’s punt return to Tara 1-yard line. Freshman quarterback Jerry Horne cashed in with a one-yard sneak for the score on the next play. Denham Springs converted a field goal late in the first half to take a 45-0 lead to the locker room.

With a running clock in the second half, RJ Johnson became the latest Jacket to score.

Tara scored in the fourth quarter on a fumble scoop-and-score by Mikyel Jones.

Jeremiah Sam’s late five-yard run completed the ground-dominant night for Denham Springs.
