Delgado stays on course with 6-3 win over Nunez

Joe Scheuermann picked up the 1,000th victory of his career this past Tuesday. On Saturday, Scheuermann started on another 1,000, though that will be tough to achieve.
Daniel Dugas pitched six strong innings and Ross Scelfo had four hits and four RBI to pace Delgado go a 6-3 victory over Nunez Community College Saturday afternoon at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in District 23 play.
Dugas went six innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out nine.
The Pelicans (9-30, 2-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on singles by Luke Toups and Tyler Roberts. Roberts then got caught in a rundown between first and second and was tagged out but Toups was able to score.
The Dolphins (30-7, 7-2) got even in the bottom of the fourth on singles by Grant Schulz and Ross Scelfo, a sacrifice bunt by Justin Ory and a throwing error which scored Schulz to make it 1-1. A wild pitch on a strikeout of Brandon Duhon allowed Duhon to reach and Scelfo to score the go-ahead run and it was 2-1.
Delgado opened it up in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on a pair of walks issued by Cameron Daigle, an error and a base-clearing double by Scelfo to make it 5-1.
Scelfo added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, RBI single which scored Connor Feustle, who had singled and it was 6-1.
Nunez came alive in the top of the eighth against Brock Theriot, scoring twice to reduce the deficit to 6-3. Michael Latino singled, his third hit of the game, and would later score on a single by Dominic Curole before Jonathan DeHarde singled home Tyler Roberts, who had walked, and it was 6-3.
Dwain Varisco came on in the ninth for Delgado to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Daigle took the loss, going four innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on three hits. He walked seven and struck out three. Braiden Usey allowed one run in three innings and Jarmarquea Diamond pitched one shutout inning for the Pelicans.
Delgado has won all five games with Nunez this season.
The two teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette.
