Delgado splits Sunday doubleheader to close opening weekend

Delgado split their Sunday doubleheader in the final day of the 2019 “Rags” Scheuermann Memorial Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, falling to Pensacola State 9-0 before rallying for a 10-0 win over Bryant & Stratton College in game two.

In the first game, Pensacola State held the Dolphins to one hit, a single by Tyler McManus in the first inning enroute to the Pirates’ 9-0 shutout win over Delgado. Pensacola State posted twelve hits and capitalized on a four run fourth inning that saw doubles by Fausto Lopez and Sean Ross.

Starting pitcher Dawson Albin (1.2 IP) suffered the loss with David Vial (1.1 IP), Brad Randazzo (2.1 IP), and Jonah Manuel (.2 IP) appearing in relief.

Delgado dominated game two as Delgado starter Austin Labat held Bryant & Stratton College to no runs on three hits while the Dolphins’ offense posted ten runs on eight hits enroute to a 10-0 mercy rule win over the Bobcats.

Delgado capitalized on four walks, a single, a hit batter, and a sacrifice fly to post a six run fifth inning, which also included a solo home run and walkoff double by Justin Ory to drive in Connor Feustle for the tenth and game-ending run. The Dolphins scored solo runs in the second and fourth on RBI singles by Brandon Duhon and Brandon Briuglio respectively. Tyler McManus hit a solo homer in the third and Grant Schulz reached on a single before scoring on Ross Scelfo’s sacrifice fly later in the inning.

With the win, the Dolphins close their opening weekend 5-1. Delgado will host Southwest Mississippi at 5:00 Wednesday at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
