Delgado loses title game to Jefferson College in 10-innings
NEW ORLEANS – Nathan Goro’s single scored Sage Boehner from third base with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Jefferson (Mo.) College defeated Delgado Community College 4-3 to win the NCAA South Central District tournament Sunday at Kirsch-Rooney.
Jefferson (43-20) advances to the Junior College World Series for the second time in its program’s history, while Delgado (42-17) fell one game short for a second consecutive year.
Boehner led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple against Delgado reliever Nate Fury. Delgado coach Joe Scheuermann elected to intentionally walk the next two hitters to load the bases, then brought in a fifth infielder.
But Goro lifted the first pitch from Fury down the right field line, where it landed just inside the foul line for the game-winner.
Viking reliever Justin Sprenger pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the win.
Alex Prestenbach drove in two of the Dolphins’ three runs, including a solo homer in the top of the fifth that gave Delgado a 3-0 lead. Jefferson rallied with a run in the sixth and two in the eighth to tie the game.
