Delgado edges Nunez, 5-4, in final meeting of season

Delgado defeated Nunez Community College 5-4 Sunday in the regular season series finale between the teams at Suarez Stadium in Chalmette.

Delgado scored the game’s first run in the top of the first on a double by Brandon Briuglio that brought home Connor Feustle, who reached on a walk.

Nunez took the lead in the fifth inning on a four run, four hit frame that included three Dolphin errors. Zach Dorcey scored the tying run on a Delgado error and a triple by Michael Latino scored the go-ahead run in Alex Powell before Nunez ended the inning with a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth, Grant Schulz led off with a single and advanced on a walk by Ross Scelfo. Schulz scored on an error that allowed Justin Ory to reach base and Scelfo scored on a groundout by Jonah Manuel to cut the Pelican lead to a run.

In the seventh, Tyler McManus reached on a fielder’s choice and Grant Schulz singled before a double by Ross Scelfo plated both runs to give Delgado the 5-4 lead and the eventual victory.

Delgado reliever Brock Daniels pitched 3.1 innings in relief of starter Payton Russell to earn the win with Dwain Varisco earning the save after facing the minimum in the seventh inning.

Delgado (31-7, 8-2) will travel to Lake Charles to face Wharton College in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at McNeese State University.
