Delgado drops Saturday baseball doubleheader in Pensacola

Pensacola, Florida – Delgado Baseball dropped a split doubleheader Saturday, falling to Pensacola State 11-8 and Coastal Alabama-North 3-0 at Pirate Park.

In the first game, Delgado took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning following a bases-clearing triple by Hayden Fuentes, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Duhon.

Pensacola State posted a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Brandon Eusebio and two runs in the third following back-to-back walks to start the inning with the runners scoring on a fielder’s choice and single to cut the Delgado lead to a run through three innings. The Pirates took a two run lead in the fourth following a leadoff double by Brandon Eusebio and a two-run double by Ryan Brewer.

A four-run fifth inning gave Delgado the lead following singles by Brandon Briuglio and Tyler McManus, who eventually scored on a error and wild pitch. An RBI single by Ross Scelfo and a two run double by Cornelius Ford gave Delgado the brief lead. A five run, five hit fifth inning allowed Pensacola State to retake the lead en route to their eventual 11-8 win over Delgado. Zach Roussel suffered the loss on the mound in relief of starter Daniel Dugas. Dwain Varisco faced the final six Pensacola batters to close the game.

In Game two, Coastal Alabama plated solo runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before an eventual shutout win over the Dolphins. Delgado was held to only two hits, a single by Connor Feustle in the fourth and a single by Stephen Klein in the seventh. Delgado starter Mason Mayfield pitched the entire game to suffer the loss, retiring six Coastal batters to strikeouts and allowing six hits.

Delgado will face Pensacola State in a noon doubleheader Sunday.
