Delgado drops doubleheader to No. 7 Northwest Florida State

MOBILE, ALABAMA – Delgado dropped a doubleheader to #7 Northwest Florida State College Friday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium.

In the first game, Northwest Florida plated five runs on five hits, including a double by Mikey Madej and an error to take the early 5-0 lead. The Raiders added two in the fourth on a two run double by Kyle Fitzgerald to expand the lead to 7-0.

Delgado loaded the bases in the fourth when Ross Scelfo and Hayden Fuentes reached on singles and Jonah Manuel walked before Cornelius Ford’s single plated the Dolphins first run of the game. A sacrifice fly by Justin Ory scored Manuel and Hayden Fuentes scored on a passed ball to make it a 7-3 game.

Northwest added two runs in the sixth on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to close the scoring enroute to their 9-3 win over Delgado.

Starting pitcher Daniel Dugas suffered the loss with Noah Fontenot (4.1 IP), David Theriot (1.0 IP), and Austin Labat (1.0 IP).

In the second game, Northwest took an early 3-0 lead in the first, including a solo homerun by Kaden Polcovich. The Raiders added two in the second and a run in the third.

Delgado’s first run of the game came in the second inning on an RBI single by Beau Freeman that scored Cornelius Ford. In the sixth, Ross Scelfo led off with a double, advanced on a single by Brandon Briuglio, and scored on a walk by Justin Ory. Jonah Manuel’s single drove in Delgado’s third and final run enroute to Northwest Florida’s 6-3 win and doubleheader sweep.

Payton Russell picked up the loss on the mound with Mason Mayfield (2.0 IP), Zach Roussel (1.0 IP), and Dwain Varisco (1.0 IP) appearing in relief.

Delgado will host Nunez Community College and Baton Rouge Community College in the Region XXIII Tournament on May 10-12 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
