Delgado downs Pensacola State to stay unbeaten in “Rags” Scheuermann tourney

Delgado defeated Pensacola State College 11-5 Saturday in the 2019 “Rags” Scheuermann Memorial Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

In the first inning, Justin Ory’s double plated Brandon Briuglio, who reached on an error for the Dolphins’ first run of the day. Pensacola State’s Luis Colon tied the game with his solo homerun in the second. In the bottom frame, Jonah Manuel opened the inning with a walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Brandon Duhon.

Delgado added two more runs in the third when Tyler McManus walked and later scored on an infield error that allowed Ross Scelfo to reach base. Scelfo advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Jonah Manuel. In the fourth, Brandon Duhon led off the inning with a base on balls, advanced on a sacrifice by Connor Feustle. Tyler McManus walked to load the bases before Duhon scored on a wild pitch. Justin Ory’s two run single added two runs for Delgado to take a 7-1 lead.

In the fifth, Angel Diaz’s solo home run gave Pensacola its second run of the game before Delgado posted a four run, three hit inning, including a RBI single by Grant Schulz and a two run double by Justin Ory. Pensacola State scored three in t he sixth on two doubles and a two-run home run by Luis Coleman before Delgado reliever Noah Fontenot closed the 11-5 win to earn his first save in relief of starter and winning pitcher Payton Russell.

Justin Ory closed the game 4 for 4, including three doubles and 5 RBI.

Delgado will meet Pensacola State at noon Sunday, immediately followed by a game against Bryant & Stratton College to close the Opening weekend.
