Delgado defeats Coastal Alabama-South in Tuesday doubleheader

Delgado defeated Coastal Alabama-South Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader in Bay Minette, Alabama.

In the first game, Delgado took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning when Delgado loaded the bases on a Coastal error, two walks, and a hit batter. In the third, Brandon Briuglio and Blake Way walked before scoring on back-to-back singles by Ross Scelfo and Lyall Ball.

The Dolphins plated two additional runs in the fourth following a leadoff walk by Noah Fontenot ad Brandon Duhon reached as a hit batter before Briuglio grounded out to score Fontenot and Way singled to score Briuglio to make it a 7-0 Delgado lead. In the fifth, Coastal Alabama hit the board with five runs when all nine batters made their way to the plate to combine for five hits a double.

In the sixth, Brandon Duhon doubled and scored following two wild pitches. Grant Schulz walked and scored on a bases-loaded hit by Cornelius Ford. Coastal threatened with a three run, four hit sixth before reliever Zach Roussel closed the scoring enroute to Delgado’s 9-8 win.

Mason Mayfield picked up his fifth win of the season, pitching five innings.

Delgado dominated game two of the doubleheader with a 13-2, six inning mercy rule victory.

Delgado hit the board with a three run first inning following singles by Brandon Duhon, Brandon Briuglio, Grant Schulz, and Ross Scelfo. Duhon reached on a single in the second, advanced on an error, and scored on a single by Brandon Briuglio. In the third, Cornelius Ford doubled and scored on a single by Noah Fontenot. The Dolphins batted around in the fifth to post six runs on five hits, three walks, and two hit by pitches.

Delgado closed the scoring with two in the sixth, including a bases loaded hit-by-pitch by Blake Way to score Simon Prevot, who led off the inning with a single and a sacrifice fly by Grant Schulz, who scored Corey Levy for Delgado’s thirteenth and final run. Coastal Alabama’s two runs were scored in the first and third innings.

Sean Bretz picked up his fourth win on the mound in a pre-determined appearance with Daniel Dugas, Dwain Varisco, Beau Balado, and Kyle Flettrich appearing in relief.

Delgado will host Nunez Community College Saturday in a doubleheader at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
