Delgado closes 2018 campaign with 19-4 loss to Jefferson College in South Central District Championship

Seminole, Oklahoma – Delgado dropped a 19-4 decision Sunday, falling to Jefferson College in the 2018 NJCAA South Central District Championship Game.

Jefferson plated the first run of the game in the top of the first when Matt Turino walked, advanced on a groundout and wild pitch, and scored on a fielder’s choice. The Vikings padded the lead with a four run, three hit second inning, highlighted by a three run double by Joey Polak.

Blake Way homered in the third to score Brandon Duhon (who reached on a fielder’s choice) to put the Dolphins on the board.

In the fourth, homeruns by Polak and Kalusniak added five additional runs as Jefferson took a 12-2 lead. In the fifth, Matt Turino reached on a leadoff error and scored on a single by Nick Hagedorn for another Jefferson run. Jack Lomarbari’s sacrifce fly plated Hunter Swift in the sixth for Jefferson’s 14th run.

Solo home runs by Blake Way and Grant Schulz in the sixth doubled Delgado’s run column for the Dolphins third and fourth runs of the game.

JeffCo’s Raul Elguezabal homered in the eighth before the Vikings added two singles, a double, and a triple in the ninith enroute to their 19-4 victory that earned them the South Central District title. The Vikings closed the game with fifteen hits.

Delgado’s Blake Way went 3 for 4 with a single two homeruns. Grant Schulz went 2 for 4 with a double and a homerun.

Dolphins starting pitcher Daniel Dugas suffered the loss, pitching into the third with Kyle Flettrich, Zach Roussel, and Beau Balado appearing in relief.

With the loss, Delgado closes its 2018 campaign 37-16 overall, having captured the Region XXIII Championship and closing as the South Central District runner-up and one of the top twenty teams in the country.
