As you know, many of our families, neighbors, and colleagues are being affected by Hurricane Laura’s damage and its aftermath to their homes and businesses. As with past storms, the Delgado Athletic Department has relaunched its Delgado Cares Project, which will be collecting gift cards of any denomination that can be shared directly with those impacted by the storm.

As we mark the fifteenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we cannot think of a better way to observe the anniversary than paying forward the kindnesses that were extended to New Orleans-area residents following the storm’s devastation and our program’s recovery in 2005.

If you would like to donate a card, we will be collecting them immediately and continuing through the end of this week.

WHO WILL RECEIVE THE CARDS? Families directly affected by Hurricane Laura, specifically those near Lake Charles and near the Louisiana coast. A detailed list of donors and recipients will be kept as best as we can. Please feel free to include your name and a message on the card.

WHAT TYPE OF CARDS ARE WE ACCEPTING? Any gift cards to national chains are being accepted. Please keep in mind that these cards will directly benefit those re-building or displaced families, so national chains such as Walmart, Lowe’s, Target, Home Improvement stores, fast food restaurants, pharmacies, etc. are preferred and can usually help with their most immediate needs.

WHERE CAN I DROP OFF THE CARD? Cards can be dropped off to the Athletic Department office in the City Park Campus Student Life Center (Bldg 23, Room 120) OR by contacting Tyler Scheuermann (tscheu@dcc.edu) to arrange for pick-up. Due to the pandemic, we are not accepting physical items, only gift cards, please.

The Delgado Cares Project was introduced in 2016 following the devastating floods in Louisiana. Student-athletes and their families compiled over seventy care baskets featuring home-care items, toiletries, food, and gift cards to assist families directly impacted by the floods. In the last few years, the project collected gift cards that were shared with colleagues in Texas and Florida impacted by hurricanes, specifically San Jacinto College, Wharton College, and Chipola College. In total, as of now, the Delgado Cares Projects has assisted more than four hundred families during their time of need.

Delgado Cares also serves as the community service branch of the Delgado Athletic Department, assisting with more than three hundred combined hours of community service performed by our student-athletes over the past three years.
