Delgado Baseball splits with Copiah-Lincoln in Saturday’s doubleheader

Delgado split Saturday’s doubleheader against Copiah-Lincoln, rallying to win the first game 2-1 before falling 7-6 in game two.

In the first game, Copiah-Lincoln scored the first run of the game in the first on a stolen base. The Wolfpack carried the 1-0 lead until the fifth when Blake Freeman led off the frame with a walk and advanced on a single by Grant Schulz. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Freeman scored on a groundout by Jake Swiacki. Schulz went on to score the Dolphins’ go-ahead run on a passed ball to give Delgado the 2-1 lead and victory.

Cole Martin pitched the complete game for Delgado, earning his second win of the campaign.

In game two, took the early 3-0 lead when the Dolphins scored three in the first following a double by Brandon Briuglio, walks by Brandon Duhon and Blake Way, and RBI singles by Tyler McManus and Lyall Ball. A fourth Delgado run scored in the second when Brandon Duhon tripled and scored on a single by Brandon Briuglio.

In the third, Copiah-Lincon’s first run scored when Craig Bradley scored on a groundout. Copiah-Lincoln scored three runs in the fifth following singles by Austin Tidwell and Craig Bradley and a triple by Chandler Dillard to the game 4-4.

Delgado plated a go-ahead run in the bottom frame when Ross Scelfo reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Beau Freeman.

Back-to-back Delgado errors in the sixth allowed two runs to score on groundouts for Co-Lin to take a 6-5 lead. Delgado tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Blake Way doubled and scored on a single by Tyler McManus.

Co-Lin answered with back-to-back singles in the seventh to take a one-run lead before retiring Delgado in order in the seventh to close their 7-6 win over the Dolphins.
Dwain Varisco suffered the loss on the mound in relief of starter Daniel Dugas and Brock Daniels.

Delgado will host Dakota State (South Dakota) in a 1:00 doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
