NEW ORLEANS – Today, the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) announced that the Decatur (Ala.) Morgan County Tourism organization and the city of Decatur, Alabama, has been selected as the host city for the 2022 GCAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships to be held on October 21 at the Oakville Indian Mounds XC Course.

Located on the banks of the Tennessee River, Decatur-Morgan County is located in Northern Alabama, approximately 20 minutes from Huntsville and a little over an hour from Birmingham and Nashville.

“We had a very competitive bidding process for this championship and the work done by Decatur Morgan County Tourism blew us away,” said GCAC Commissioner Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes. “Decatur is within our GCAC footprint, and they have an amazing course that is going to make for a great conference championship meet.”

Decatur is no stranger to hosting competitive cross country meets, as the Oakville Mounds Indian course also serves as the site for the Alabama High School Athletic Association state championship, as well as other high-profile distance meets throughout the year.

“Being awarded the cross country conference championship for the GCAC is an honor, and we cannot wait to host the league and its teams this October,” said Don Dukemineer, Director of Sports Development for Decatur Morgan County Tourism. “Decatur is a vibrant and growing city that loves its sports, and having another major event in our city will allow us to showcase that passion as the GCAC crowns its next champion.”

More information on the 2022 GCAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will be announced in the coming weeks.
