Davey named SLC, LSWA player of the week; McMahon garners state honors

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese linebacker Micah Davey has been named this week’s Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

In addition, the redshirt freshman from Baton Rouge as voted as the Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week along with Cowboy senior running back Deonta McMahon for Offensive Player of the Week for their play in Saturday’s 24-20 win over Lamar to recapture the Battle of the Border trophy.

Davey started at linebacker in the 40th annual the Battle of the Border against Lamar in replacement of an injured Kordell Williams and responded with a career-high 18 tackles. The redshirt freshman recovered a fumble and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown to mark the sixth-longest fumble return for a score in school history. He added a tackle for a loss and 12 of his 18 tackles were solos.

McMahon save the best game of his college career for his last when he rushed for a career-high 239 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. He had scores of 79 and 70 yards, making him the first player in school history to have two rushing TDs in the same game going for 70 yards or more.

The senior from Frostproof, Florida became the first Cowboy since 2008 to lead the Southland Conference in rushing when he ran for 1,408 yards on the season, an average of 128.8 per game. He averaged a league-high 7.4 yards per carry, which ranked No. 4 in the FCS, and ran for 100 yards or more seven times on the season. He also led the league and ranked No. 2 in the nation with 171.8 all-purpose yards per game.

This is the first weekly award for Davey and the second for McMahon.
