John Ehret Football
Travis Mumphrey Jr. and the John Ehret Patriots take a trek up to West Monroe for a Class 5A clash in Week 1.

The regular season kicks off, weather permitting, with a bang this coming weekend with most games set for Friday night.

Three of the top games are in South Louisiana, where Division I power John Curtis travels to Behrman Stadium to take on defending Class 5A state champion Landry-Walker Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Patriots won 35-22 over the Charging Bucs a year ago.

Also in our area, a good St. Paul’s squad welcomes defending Class 4A state champion Karr to Hunter Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. The Cougars won a 35-28 shootout a year ago.

A pair of defending state champions square off in Walker as two-time defending Division IV state champ Southern Lab battles defending Division III state champion Riverside. The game was moved this week from Friday night in Reserve to Thursday at Walker High School. The Kittens are reeling a bit from a bevy of sanctions levied by the LHSAA and a change in coaches, as a result.

In the Baton Rouge area, 2015 Division I state champion Catholic High travels to 2015 Division II state champion Parkview Baptist in a marquee matchup. The Bears prevailed 24-13 a year ago.

In the Bayou area, Division II powerhouse De La Salle travels to Galliano to face 4A South Lafourche in what should be a real test for the Tarpons.

In Central Louisiana, Jena battles Winnfield in what should be a good one. The Giants won convincingly, 48-14 a year ago.

In the Acadiana area, Class 3A power Kaplan travels to 5A power Acadiana to take on the Wreckin’ Rams. The Pirates were 13-1 and lost in the semifinals to Amite a year ago while Acadiana won state titles in 2013 and 2014.

In the Lake Charles area, Division III power Notre Dame plays host to always tough LaGrange. The Pios, who won the state title in 2015, got by the Class 5A Gators 13-6 a year ago.

Among Shreveport area teams, defending Division I state champion Evangel Christian makes a long trip to face East St. Louis, IL. The Flyers are a defending state champion and are 1-0, having opened the season with a 40-28 win over Providence Catholic (IL).

In the Monroe area, Class 5A power West Monroe, who played for the state title a year ago, entertains tough John Ehret, who played for the 5A championship in 2015. The Patriots looked good in their jamboree, despite dealing with a change in coaches.
