Cowgirls fall to Lamar, 79-48

LAKE CHARLES — McNeese Women’s Basketball suffered a 79-48 Southland Conference loss here Thursday night against Lamar to fall to 8-13 overall and 5-5 in league play. With the win Lamar improved to 11-10 overall and also 5-5 in the SLC.

Paris Mullins led McNeese in scoring with 11 points and was the only Cowgirl to reach double figure scoring.

With the game tied at 15 all early in the second quarter, Lamar went on a 16-2 run to take a 31-17 lead and never looked back. The Cardinals held a 36-22 halftime lead.

Things didn’t get better in the second half as the Cardinals continued to dominate McNeese in the paint and continued its hot shooting.

Lamar scored 38 points in the paint and scored 17 second chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds. The Cardinals ended the game outrebounding the Cowgirls 42-24 and was nearly perfect from the free throw line, making 19 of 21 attempts.

The Cardinals doubled up the Cowgirls in the third quarter, outscoring McNeese 25-14 to extend the lead to 61-34.

Lamar placed three players in double figures with Akasha Davis leading all players with 20 points on 6 of 11 from the field while Malay McQueen scored 16 and Sabria Dean added 13 points.

The Cardinals ended the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field (27 for 56), 46.2 percent from three-point range(6 for 13) and 90.5 percent from the free throw line.

McNeese will travel to Texas A&M-Commerce this Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
