The District 6-5A regular season finale pitting Covington at Mandeville is canceled due to COVID-19 issues surrounding Covington.

The Lions made the decision late Monday.

“We found out yesterday afternoon after practice that two players were affected with positive tests,” Salter said. “We had to trace back to see who was impacted and it was a whole bunch, due to contact tracing. The last contact was last Friday. We would be able to participate in the playoffs, if we get into the top 32. I was advised by the school board to shut down. I feel terrible for Mandeville but it was unavoidable.”

Despite the disappointment, Salter is thankful for what has already transpired.

“Four months ago, we were going to get no games,” Salter said. “We should count our blessings that the kids got a chance to play. We surely hope we have one more game to play.”

Mandeville coach Hutch Gonzales is disappointed but feels good about his team going into the playoffs despite not playing week ten.

“It is one of those unavoidable situations and it is not anyone’s fault,” Gonzales said. “I had a good conversation with Coach Salter, a good friend. We are in the top 10 presently. We will get a home playoff game. If we can get a top eight seed, we could get two consecutive home games which could line up very well for us if we come out and play.”

Gonzales feels good about his team’s prospects.

“I’m not concerned about a week off. It’s probably advantageous to us health-wise. We have a few guys banged up on defense. This week will due them justice in their healing process. We are a veteran team. I don’t think the layoff will hurt an experienced, senior-laden team. They know how to handle a week like this.”

Covington (2-5) figures to finish anywhere from 29-33 range in power ratings.

Mandeville (6-1) is currently in the top 10 in the power ratings.
