A former Redemptorist High (New Orleans) and Tulane standout, Mathews served as head coach of the Cajuns for six seasons from 2017-22.

Mathews led Country Day to a fourth straight district championship this season. Country Day finished the 2022 season 18-7, falling in the playoffs to Catholic Pointe Coupee. Mathews is likely to be named Coach of the Year in the district.

Mathews, a Tulane Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, remains at Country Day in a teaching capacity and works with the middle school as well.

“I have enjoyed my time as the varsity baseball coach,” Mathews said. “Country Day is a wonderful place. I want to be supportive of the young men in the baseball program and the school and of whoever takes over as the baseball coach. I want to contribute everything I can moving forward to the school and I want to be very supportive of the program. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish.”
