HOUSTON – Following the program’s first Southland Conference Tournament title, the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team was voted to finish fourth in the Southland, as the league office announced its 2018-19 women’s basketball preseason poll Wednesday morning at Social Media Day at the Toyota Center.

At 11-7, Nicholls finished tied for fourth last season in league play and claimed the No. 4 seed en route to a Southland championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Colonels were projected to place ninth in last year’s poll.

Lamar, which won the regular season conference championship, was the unanimous favorite in the preseason poll, receiving 24 first-place votes and 288 total points. Stephen F. Austin came in at second (248), and Central Arkansas was third (231) and had two first-place votes. Nicholls finished close behind UCA with 226 points.

The preseason poll is voted upon by the head coach and sports information director from each Southland school. Each individual ranks the other 12 teams in their predicted order of regular season finish. Ranking one’s own school is not permitted.

Social Media Day can be followed on the Southland’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts and will air on ESPN3 tonight at 6 p.m. The ESPN3 telecast will be archived.

Men’s and women’s basketball season ticket packages and renewals will go on sale Oct. 10. Visit or call the Nicholls Ticket Office at 985-448-4790. To stay up to date with Nicholls women’s basketball, follow the team on Twitter @Nicholls_WBB.
