Colonels’ Alvarez, Privateers’ Mitchell earn Southland Baseball Player of the Week nods
FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls slugger Edgar Alvarez and New Orleans hurler Brandon Mitchell won the Southland Baseball Player of the Week awards for the sixth week of the 2023 season, which were announced Monday by the conference office.
Hitter of the Week: Edgar Alvarez, Nicholls – Jr. – 1B – Orlando, Fla. (Boone HS)
Alvarez put together a phenomenal week at the plate, batting .500 with four RBIs to lead the Colonels to a 3-1 week. Alvarez hit safely in all four games and in the series win over McNeese, he posted three multi-hit efforts for a .583 average (7-of-12) and had four doubles. In the 12th inning at McNeese on Saturday, Alvarez recorded his third double of the game for the go-ahead RBI. He ended the series with a 2-for-3 outing and added two more walks, giving him four for the series. Alvarez currently ranks fifth in the league with a .354 batting average.

Pitcher of the Week: Brandon Mitchell, New Orleans- Sr. – LHP – Houston, Texas (Elsik HS)
Mitchell was lights out for the Privateers in Saturday’s game against Lamar after a first inning that saw the Cardinals score two runs. For the remainder of the game, Mitchell didn’t concede anything in the run column as he threw his second career complete game. He only allowed three hits after the first inning and he induced 10 ground ball outs.
