Archbishop Hannan High School is pleased to announce the hiring of Chris Garrett as the head baseball coach for the 2021-22 school year.

Garrett comes off a successful season as an assistant with the Covington High School program that saw the Lions claim a district title.

The coach has 17 years of coaching experience and played at the prep level for Vincent High School in Alabama and continued his career collegiate career at Central Alabama Community College for Don Ingram and Montevallo under Bob Riesner and Greg Goff.

Garrett said he was extremely excited to take over the program in the upcoming season.

“I’ve always wanted to be a head coach and have had opportunities at other places to be a head coach, but something has always come up,” Garrett said “I’ve always been a believer that everything happens for a reason – and when I was approached about this position, I knew it was time.

Garrett said he has a holistic coaching philosophy that matches with Archbishop Hannan High School’s mission of building character, forming faith and inspiring excellence.

“The goal is to create young men that are positive adults. When they grow up, I want them to proud of who they have become,” Garrett said. “I’m a firm believer in using baseball to teach life lessons. Ten years from now, you may not remember a win or a loss, but you’ll remember the relationships you’ve developed and the positive experience you’ve had.”

Garrett also helped coach the 8th grade football team at Hannan this season and is familiar with the school and the program.

The Hawks’ season ended this weekend in the Regional round of the Division II playoffs, falling to E.D. White in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Archbishop Hannan athletic director Michael Perniciaro said the school was bringing in a coach that had experience and would continue building upon the program’s success.

“We are excited about the hire of Chris Garrett for our baseball program,” Perniciaro said. “Chris’s vision and expertise in baseball will help shape the program for years to come.

“We thank coach Paul Wineski for everything he has done for the school and the program and wish him the best of luck with the next step in his career.”

Archbishop Hannan Head of School Chad Barwick said he was excited to bring in a coach who fit with the school’s mission.

“Having Coach Garrett lead our Hawks in the baseball program is exciting. He is a good man, dedicated coach, and will provide a Christ-centered environment for our boys to grow,” Barwick said. “I’ve become a fan through his community coaching in football and look forward to him taking our baseball program to new heights.”
