Champions Challenge Tournament opens today at Pontchartrain Center

Area Prep Volleyball Report for Friday, Oct. 19

The seventh annual Champions Challenge Tournament kicks off today at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

Top teams in Louisiana competing include all five defending state champions Mount Carmel (Division I), Teurlings Catholic (Division II),Vandebilt Catholic (Division III), Pope John Paul II (Division IV) and Country Day (Division IV).

Other top teams participating include Archbishop Hannan, Archbishop Chapelle, Ascension Episcopal, Cabrini, East Ascension, Northshore, Notre Dame, Parkview Baptist, Riverside Academy, South Lafourche, St. Amant, St. Joseph’s Academy, St. Scholastica, St. Thomas More, Westlake and E.D. White Catholic.

Teurlings Catholic is the defending champion as the Rebels defeated Mount Carmel in the final match a year ago. Three of the five defending state champions top the latest power ratings from the LHSAA (Mount Carmel, Teurlings Catholic, Country Day) while E.D. White Catholic is the top rated team in Division III and Archbishop Hannan is No. 1 in Division IV.

There will be a junior varsity tournament as well, including Cabrini, Country Day, Archbishop Hannan, Mount Carmel, St. Joseph’s Academy, St. Scholastica, Vandebilt Catholic and Thibodaux.

The event serves as a warm-up, a pre-curser, a trial run for the state volleyball championships which will take place Nov. 8-10 at the Pontchartrain Center.

The event begins at 3 p.m. today and runs to 10 p.m. and resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. and runs through 8 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
