The 48th football meeting between Chalmette and Holy Cross was not a game for the meek of heart.

A frenetic second half was culminated by Douglas Saavedra’s successful 38-yard field goal with 6:23 remaining that carried Chalmette to a 23-21 victory against one of its staunchest rivals.

Saavedra’s field goal came one year after he had a potential winning field goal blocked in the final two minutes and returned for a touchdown in a 31-22 Holy Cross victory.

Holy Cross (1-2) will try to overcome the sting of a second straight close loss next they take on Archbishop Shaw in the district opener for both teams Saturday, Sept. 24 in a game to be aired live on WGSO 990am.

Chalmette (2-1) will look for a third straight win next Friday when the Owls host Grace King.
