LaPLACE – St. Charles Catholic marched to a Division III state championship in baseball this past season on the strength of solid pitching, solid defense and timely hitting.

All three aspects were on full display Tuesday evening as the St. Charles Catholic-based Cretin Townsend Homes squad downed Hahnville 3-1 at Comet Field in Crescent City Sports Prep Summer League play.

The Tigers were playing for newly named Hahnville head coach Jared Vial, who came over from rival Destrehan to take over the program.

Hahnville broke on top with what turned out to be their only run in the top of the first on walks to Chase Morales and Aidan Machado and an RBI single by Jaden Rosales to take a 1-0 lead.

The Comets tied it in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit as Ayden Authement walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

Cretin Townsend took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on a single by Authement, who advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Brayden Bertucci to make it 2-1.

Cretin Townsend finished the scoring in the fifth inning when Ian Arnett was hit by a pitch, stole a base and would score on an error.

Hahnville got a pair of singles in the seventh inning but Hudson Heltz was able to get Aidan Machado to pop out to end the game to pick up the save.

Britten Dean started, going three innings, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Brandon Kragle was outstanding in relief, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing no runs on a hit with a walk and three strikeouts.

Jake Risinger started for the Tigers and took the loss, going three innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Risinger walked two and struck out three but had three wild pitches. Beau Parker pitched the final three innings, allowing just a run on four hits for Hahnville.

Dean was 2-for-2 with a walk for Cretin Townsend while Heltz had a double. The St. Charles Catholic-based squad lost three runners on the bases and hit into a double play but played errorless defense.
