Catholic and St. Thomas More boys, SJA and Neville girls win state tennis titles

In Monroe, Catholic High of Baton Rouge and St. Thomas More captured the boys state championships while St. Joseph’s and Neville won girls state titles at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

In Division I, Catholic edged Brother Martin for the title, scoring 16 points to 15 for the Crusaders. St. Paul’s was third with Jesuit fourth.

The Catholic duo of Ashton Ellis and Carson Chassiagnac won the doubles championship, defeating Brother Martin’s Jack Robinson and Evan Walker in the title match.

Brother Martin’s Matthew Armbruster, a UNO signee, won the Division I singles tate title, defeating Charles Fremaux of Catholic in straight sets. It is the second individual title for Armbruster, who won in 2019.

In the girls Division I competition, St. Joseph’s Academy edged out Mount Carmel Academy 14.5-14 to win the championship.

The Redstickers gained the edge winning the doubles championship as the team of Anne Guglielmo and Sophia Manuel rallied to edge Caroline Arnold-Niki Bountovinas of the Cubs 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

Iris Westmoreland of Mount Carmel reached the singles final but lost to brilliant freshman Natalie Devraj of Mandeville 6-2, 6-0.

Mandeville finished third while Dominican tied for fourth.

In the boys Division II competition, St. Thomas More won the boys championship with 16.5 points with Neville finishing second. Lusher Charter was the top area finisher, tying for sixth.

In the girls Division II competition, Neville claimed the title with Lusher Charter finishing second. St. Scholastica tied for third.

Lusher’s Gavriella Smith won the singles title, defeating Emma Koch of North Vermilion 6-3, 6-3 in the title match.

The individual title was the second for Smith, who won in 2019.
